Census Session held October 16~

Not a lot of folks attended, so the session was just like friends sitting around having coffee and discussing current events. Christopher Welch, chairman for the Stone/Taney counties Complete Count Committee, was the speaker. Christopher is a very energetic and nice guy- he was happy to answer any questions, and those he couldn't answer he promised to let folks know when he found out. The handouts he provided included his contact information and he encouraged all to contact him with questions.

We saw a sample of the current version of the 10 questions the survey will include- they may change. One discussion we had was in reference to two of the questions- what is your race and are you Hispanic. Folks were unclear as to why Hispanic was included separately. A reason one participant gave was so it could be determined how many Spanish speaking residents there are in order to determine what needs to be published in Spanish- for example, news broadcasts, grocery labels, etc.

Our next session will be Friday, November 13- call and sign up now!

If you have questions, post them here in Comments.

“In March 2010 every household in the United States will receive a United States Census 2010 questionnaire, come learn more about why we have the Census and why it’s so important.,” said Nellie Lamers, interim coordinator, Tri-Lakes TCRC.

“The 2010 Census is a count of everyone living in the United States and is mandated by the U.S. Constitution. Census data guide the distribution of more than $400 billion in federal funds to local, state and tribal governments each year. They're also used to determine Congressional apportionment and to help guide planning decisions, such as the placement of schools, hospitals, transportation, and business and industrial development. The 2010 Census questionnaire will be one of the shortest in history, consisting of 10 questions and taking about 10 minutes to complete. Strict laws protect the confidentiality of respondents and the information they provide.” http://www.census.gov

Partners in this session include the United States Census 2010 and University of Missouri Extension.

University of Missouri Extension programs focus on the high-priority needs of Missourians. Each county extension center, with oversight by locally elected and appointed citizens, is your local link to practical education on almost anything.
