Thinking about Guardianship?

  • Are you concerned about the safety or protection of a family member with a disability?
  • Are you the parent or family member of an individual with a disability who is turning 18?
  • Have you thought about the legal implications of guardianship for your family member?
  • Has someone suggested you should pursue guardianship for your loved one?
  • Did you know there might be options you're not aware of that would work for your situation?
  • Do you work with individuals or families who may be considering these issues?
  • Are you a teacher or other school staff that work with students who are in the special education transition process?

The (Alternatives To) Guardianship Project seeks to empower individuals with developmental disabilities and thier families to make informed decisions about guardianship issues and to explore less-restrictive alternatives to guardianship. The Project is sponsored by the Missouri Planning Council on Developmental Disabilities (MPCDD). It involves collaboration between Missouri People First; UMKC-Institute for Human Development, UCEDD (IHD); and Missouri Protection & Advocacy Services (MoP&A).
