MU Extension “Stay Strong, Stay Healthy” Exercise Program

Wayne Dietrich, community development specialist, headquartered in Taney County has led this program here at the TCRC for the past month- this group will meet for a few more sessions.

We've really enjoyed hosting them here- what fun to see the folks come in every Tuesday and Thursday for the sessions. There are about 10 folks participating. Wish I could join in, but since I can't it inspires me to do a workout when I get home in the evenings. I try to do two workouts with weights a week, just like they do here.

It's amazing how good it makes you feel- mentally as well as physically. Mentally- I'm proud of myself, knowing I'm doing something good for my health. Physically- it really does give me more energy!

“Stay Strong, Stay Healthy,” a program developed by Tufts University and adopted by MU Extension, is designed to help older adults improve strength, flexibility and balance.

According to research conducted by Tufts, strength training improves bone density, can help reduce falls, improve arthritis symptoms, increase flexibility in older adults and can lead to a healthier, more active lifestyle.

“If you have been thinking about signing up for an exercise program this class is a great way for older adults to learn basics and develop a routine. Past participants reported a definite change in their strength, balance and flexibility,” said Wayne Dietrich, community development specialist with University of Missouri Extension in Taney County.

The program is limited to 16 participants. All necessary equipment is provided during the class.

Facebook Classes

Last week (April 26 - 30) was a little trying at the TCRC- the internet was down on Monday- the phone company had to come and work out that problem.

Then on Friday- we were one hour into the Facebook Basics class and it went down again! This time it was a bad switch.

We're expecting a great week this week!

So...we have two new sessions of Facebook scheduled for the folks who were in Friday's class. And I want to say a big THANK YOU to all these folks- they were very gracious and understanding. We have spots available in these two new sessions: Friday, May 7, 1:00 - 4:00 pm and Monday, May 17, 9:00 am - noon.
